TV One: We May Have Something Here !!!

TV One a station that I constantly watch is bringing 15 new television series to the network for the Summer/Fall lineup. Can we say super excited!  You ever wonder what singers like Faith Evans, Syleena Johnson, Monifah Carter, Nicci Gilbert (Brownstone) and Keke Wyatt all have in common? They all were once major label recording artist that are now independent artist on independent labels. It seems that if you want your voice to be heard and more freedom artistically and creatively then independent is the way to go. The series will focus on the pass, present and future career moves along with their day to day life in the music industry. As we all know R&B music was very prominent in the 90’s and now well…….(crickets are going off in my head) there really is no real singers that have hits that will last the test of time.

Is The Music Industry Dead: Well For Black’s At least?

After the shocking news of Whitney Houston passing on last Saturday afternoon and the grammy’s following. One has to ask itself is the music industry dead? Coming from a singing background being almost signed to a recording contract and working hard to get into the music industry for many years. I wasn’t your typical singer….looking up to singers such as Vesta Williams, Phyllis Hyman, Anita Baker, Lalah Hathaway and the list goes on and on. After watching the “Grammy’s”  (crickets going off in my head) I have to ask what happen to real music. Yes, times have changed, generations do change but at the same time does that mean singers such as Etta James, Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, Sarah Vaughn, En Vogue, Chakah Khan who have paved the way and worked so hard to create that pure sound has gone to waste? Yes we have Jill Scott, Ledisi, Kem, Kindred, BUT they DO NOT get the recognition they deserve. I remember when rap was first introduced to the world it told a story about the inner city and poverty life that the average black families were living in their community. NOW rap has totally changed talking about ass shaking, bottles popping, money spending, making it rain in the clubs a life that the average working class is not living. Working minimum wage job does not allow the average college students whose working toward there full potential dream in making to “pop bottles” or a single mother having the luxury of spending money however she pleases and let’s not even talk about how our young black men think it’s cool to wear their pants at the ankles having to constantly pull them up every five seconds. How do we get back to music that once had a meaning to its message? Whose to blame and how do we as adults who love real music stand up and make a change? Because as this very moment I’m ready to boycott the record companies and A&R’s that find these types of talent.

Are you interested in Radio????!!!!

Celebration….

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and what comes along with thanksgiving? Thats right shopping. The stores have already began to market the commercial adds on television gearing everyone up for “black friday”. I have never once participated in the madness that I hear others talk about for weeks but this year I decided to join the mass crowd. Unfortunately, I have to work that evening so my plans of any shopping will be cut short.

Another reason of celebration for me is, this semester is my last where I take classes. Finally, I am done with all my major and non major classes and only thing is left  for me is my internship which starts in the spring. When I originally added “New New Media” this class was just another class for me that I wanted to just bs through just to get my grade and leave. Labarbera has really pushed his students and push forward their critical thinking skills, making way for us to really think about how our young generation uses the internet and our online content. Yes, I know this may sound rhetoric but I can’t seem to stress enough to people that putting your personal business, photos, video’s among other things can not only hurt your online image for potential jobs but it’s just plain right unnecessary. Labarbera, has even taken the time out to have little seminars on the issue and while many get it some just don’t understand. One to never put my personal business on social media sites made even more aware of myself and how others viewed me. I also learned to be more conscious about the news and their content. I began to take all that I learned in my journalism  classes and apply them to my daily life and learn how to “fact check” first before believing what is told to me. It took a great Professor such as Larbarbera, to really bring everything home for me, for It to actually make sense and I thank him for that!!!!

Are we there yet!!!!

So many scandal’s when It comes to the media  especially when It’s about politics. The story that broke out this past Friday, about Cheney Mason broke just moments after he was hospitalized before giving a speech to Bethune-Cookman University’s Mass Communications annual conference. Student’s from WM&G student television station was able to first get the breaking news right after the incident happen. Herman Cain, whose expected to run for the 2012 election has been getting a lot of flack because of his extra martial scandals and now outrageous bumper stickers has been made in mockery of him and his candidacy. I could go on about the scandals that have broken over the weekend and the internet, news and social media’s sites there to pick It up. It it wasn’t for new new media would we still be in the dark ages as to hear about the different scandals that break every day?

Did I say that………

This passed week Professor Labarbera talked to students in Lee Ryhant dormitory about the positive and negatives, of online imaging. The presentation touched on the importance on how you determine what your online image is interpreted for the public to see. The powerpoint showed the various students on the campus of how students use their free time with the internet via Facebook, twitter and youtube. Students seems to use social networking sites as a diary for the world to see and read without thinking twice. The Daytona Beach News Journal who showed out the blue took quotes from the students including Professor Labarbera, who showed us the news paper article which had many misquotes and poor editing. Labarbera made a good point in class ” The newspaper has a way of twisting words to fit what they want you to say or trying to say”. Even at the short presentation Labarbera gave, I can tell some of the students who were there still didn’t see that posting a youtube video of yourself clapping your thighs could keep you from getting a potential job and people taking you seriously. There is a lot more to be done when it comes to students and their way of thinking and from the looks of this, this only the beginning.

Homecoming is finally over but the festivities continue’s with the Florida’s annual classic.  As the campus dwindles down from all the excitement there is more to come starting next with and week after next. Wildcats vs. Rattlers prepare to take on for the classic title and the night before the battle of the bands. This is a great way to start the thanksgiving break and along with leading into the last semester of fall. Since this semester is my last semester of classes I have been really working hard to continue to put myself out their in a positive perspective when it comes to voice over acting. I’m excited to be starting my internship in the spring semester and is so happy to be done with classes. I am looking forward to what the rest of the school year has in store for me while doing my part to remain active, involved and humble.  I have been seeing a lot of internship opportunities that I am very interested in and preparing myself to apply for. I really believe in myself  sadly I’m just not a person that has to been seen and heard I guess that started back from when I won Chicago Idol back in 2006, instead of being a person that feels the need to be seen just to show off I believe in just putting my best foot forward and when the time comes thats when I perform.
